How Do We Get "Unstuck" in Our Decision-Making Process?

There’s one way to get unstuck when making a decision between two great options...wager a guess! You’ve already made your pros/cons list, and you just don’t know which decision is better. Unless you are able to update your probability of making the right decision with new information, we might as well leave it up to our rules of thumb [and gut] to make the ‘right’ decision.

Here are 3 practical actions we can take to help us make choices that don’t leave us pained by the “what ifs.”

  • Make sure you fully understand the importance of your decision by considering alternatives -- be careful of information overload though, which can lead to no decision!

  • Move from short-term to long-term thinking -- we tend to make decisions now without our best interests in mind for the future.

  • Prepare to be wrong and re-calibrate -- we will never fully be able to predict every possible outcome.

Lastly, decision-making is a tool we can practice, with many theories and processes that deliver solutions. Ultimately we need to be able to make decisions with concerted effort, decisions on the fly, and know when to blend the two.
